College Student Development: Moving from Autonomy to Interdependence

Development of emotional autonomy involves a gradual decrease in the need for approval and reassurance of others, toward independence and self regulation. Recognition of interdependence follows from independence as the student finds a middle ground between being one’s own person and slavish conformity.

How can parents support this natural development? How can college students assert autonomy and move toward interdependence?

Chickering’s 7 Vectors of Development

Arthur Chickering’s “7 Vectors of Development” theorizes there are 7 areas of development that students must pass through in college, and that some students arrive to campus in the beginning phases of development while others have already developed a strong self-image. By moving through these 7 vectors, students would move toward solidifying their identity.
